An Introduction of Tai O

Tai O is situated on the western side of Lantau Island, near the Pearl River Estuary. Over a hundred years ago, the Pearl River Estuary was abundant in fish resources, attracting many fishermen to settle in Tai O, which has since become one of Hong Kong’s most famous fishing villages.

To Live by Sam Pan

In the early days, fishermen lived on their sampans, where they conducted all their daily activities. When fishermen were not out fishing, their sampans would be moored on the shallow banks of the Tai O waterways.

From Sampan to Stilts

Later, fishermen would drag their broken boats ashore, secure them with stones, and cover them with palm leaves to serve as shelter. This living style gradually evolved into the stilt houses seen today. The stilt houses, sampans, crisscrossing waterways, and bridges together create a picturesque scene of Tai O.
